An artist statement by someone who doesn’t necessarily believe in artist statements
I believe in good things.
I believe in the dance.
I believe in art as a method of joining the dance.
Poetry, art, music, attunes us with G-d,
& if we begin this transcendence of the self,
we can interact & witness to pieces of the divine
– however incompletely.
I think artists,
& more so Christians,
are supposed to be light for “good” things,
of which art is included.
To be an artist/Christian, therefore, requires you to think about issues,
not so much to be critical, but rather to show a greater “good.”
Sadly, both the artist & the Christian can do a piss poor job
(especially?)
as of late
(& certainly the latter more than the former).
I believe in good things:
reckless love,
care for creation,
peacebleness towards enemies,
nonviolence,
reconciliation,
justice builders,
& being a witness in a world gone mad for
money, power, and things:
the vertigo of our time.
I’m not so much a critic as I am an observer.
These poems are an expression for post-Americans
& other aliens in a strange land.
